The famous French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon executed likenesses of well-known figures such as Voltaire, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, and Lafayette, and created the best-known portrait of Thomas Jefferson in 1789. Jefferson’s residence in Paris, exposure to art there, and Houdon’s training, sculpting process, and famous works are outlined.
